Progress toward a Malaria-Free Arabian Peninsula between 1950-2010

Published in Advances in Parasitology, ‘The Malaria Transition on the Arabian Peninsula: Progress toward a Malaria-Free Region Between 1950-2010’ documents the efforts of countries in the region to reduce their malaria burden. The authors note that collaborative efforts, notably the Peninsula’s malaria-free initiative of 2005, have helped to shrink the malaria map including elimination in the United Arab Emirates. Today, indigenous malaria cases are reported in only Saudi Arabia and Yemen, with the latter contributing to over 98% of the clinical burden.

Malaria-Eliminating Countries

Today, 34 countries on the margins of the malaria endemic zone are working toward malaria elimination as part of national or subnational goals. There is no single strategy or approach to pursuing elimination, and many different techniques are used depending on the local malaria situation, including parasite prevalence, vectors, geography, and population density. This section provides an opportunity for the 34 countries to share information about their particular challenges, efforts and strategies, and it provides a forum to learn from one another.

Regional Initiatives for Elimination

Countries that pursue elimination face the challenge of continued malaria importation from neighboring countries. This is particularly the case for countries that share lengthy land borders, but it also applies to island countries with multiple entry points. Cross-border initiatives and/or regional initiatives to reduce malaria prevalence in neighboring countries are therefore critical to a country’s success in achieving elimination and “holding the line” against reimportation. A number of different cross-border initiatives – some of them focusing specifically on elimination – around the world are underway today.

Additional Resources

Important elimination resources, such as case studies and feasibility studies, provide a learning opportunity for countries and international partners to learn from the experience, successes, challenges, and failures of current and past elimination efforts. Before deciding to embark on a path to elimination, the MEG recommends that countries conduct a thorough assessment of the technical, operational, and financial feasibility of elimination.
